    Privacy Policy

Your privacy matters. Here's exactly how OpenMSG handles your data.

    Last updated: 13 March 2026

    1. Overview

Deakin Carr ("we", "our", or "us") is the developer and publisher of the OpenMSG Viewer ("OpenMSG") desktop application for Windows that allows users to open and read Microsoft Outlook .msg files without requiring Microsoft Outlook. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use our application and visit our website at openmsgviewer.com. We are based in Australia and this policy is written with reference to the Privacy Act 1988(Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

    2. Information We Do Not Collect

OpenMSG is designed with privacy at its core. The desktop application:

    • Does not upload your .msg files to any server
    • Does not transmit email content, attachments, or metadata from your files
    • Does not collect personal information from the files you open
    • Does not require an account, login, or registration
    • Does not use advertising SDKs or sell data to third parties

All file processing happens entirely on your local device. Your .msg files never leave your computer.

    3. Desktop Application

The OpenMSG desktop application is distributed through the Microsoft Store. All .msg file processing occurs locally on your device. The application does communicate with external services for crash reporting and usage analytics as described below.

Crash Reporting (BugSplat): OpenMSG uses BugSplat to collect crash reports when the application encounters an unexpected error. These reports may include technical information such as stack traces, operating system version, and application version. Crash reports do not contain the content of your .msg files, email messages, or attachments. This data is used solely to identify and fix software defects. You can review BugSplat's privacy policy at bugsplat.com/privacy.

Usage Telemetry (PostHog): OpenMSG uses PostHog to collect anonymous usage telemetry, such as which features are used and general interaction patterns. This helps us understand how the application is used so we can improve it. Telemetry data does not include the content of your .msg files, email messages, attachments, or any personally identifiable information. You can review PostHog's privacy policy at posthog.com/privacy.

    4. Online Viewer

The OpenMSG online viewer available at openmsgviewer.com/web-viewer processes .msg files entirely within your web browser using client-side JavaScript. Files you open in the online viewer are never uploaded to our servers. All parsing and rendering occurs locally in your browser session and is discarded when you close or refresh the page.

    5. Website Analytics

Our website at openmsgviewer.com may use privacy-respecting analytics (including PostHog) to understand general traffic patterns such as page views and referral sources. This data is aggregated and anonymous — we do not track individual users or link analytics data to personal identities. No cookies are used for advertising or cross-site tracking.

    6. Microsoft Store

OpenMSG is distributed via the Microsoft Store. When you download or update the app, Microsoft may collect certain data in accordance with their own privacy policy. We do not have access to your Microsoft account details or purchase information beyond aggregate download statistics provided by Microsoft.

    7. Contact & Support

If you contact us via email, we collect only the information you voluntarily provide (such as your name, email address, and message content). This information is used solely to respond to your inquiry and is not shared with third parties or used for marketing purposes.

    8. Third-Party Services

OpenMSG does not sell data to or share information with advertising networks, data brokers, or social media platforms. We do not monetise user data in any form. The third-party services we use are limited to:

    • BugSplat — crash reporting (technical diagnostic data only)
    • PostHog — anonymous usage analytics and telemetry
    • Microsoft — app distribution via the Microsoft Store

Some of these services may store data on servers located outside Australia. By using OpenMSG, you acknowledge that anonymous technical and usage data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than Australia, in accordance with the respective service providers' privacy policies.

    9. Your Rights Under Australian Law

Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:

    • Request access to any personal information we hold about you
    • Request correction of any inaccurate personal information
    • Make a complaint about a breach of the APPs

Since OpenMSG does not collect personal information beyond what you voluntarily provide when contacting support, these rights primarily apply to support correspondence. If you wish to exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details below. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the GDPR, including the right to request deletion of your data (Right to be Forgotten). As we only hold support emails, you may email us to have these deleted.

    10. Children's Privacy

OpenMSG does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under the age of 13. Since the application does not collect personal data from any user, there is no special risk to children's privacy.

    11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically for the latest information.
